How tall must a stove pipe above a free-standing fireplace be before it can make a 45 degree angle?
I have a "Majestic" brand free-standing fireplace I am restoring in a house built in 1950. The fireplace was made in 1958. I have to use an elbow joint to bypass a rafter. How tall must the pipe be from the top of the fireplace (an Eames era conical beauty) before the elbow is connected? I do not want my house to burn down regardless of the beauty of the fireplace. Any suggestions?

how much work would entail the demo/removal of a brick-faced free standing fireplace?
the fireplace is in the middle of our dining room & family room. we have small children and worry about them running into the fireplace and getting hurt and we just want to open up the room. any idea how much work this entails? the fireplace is not brick - it's brick faced - not sure what's under the brick face - obviously some fireproof sheeting i guess. we received a quote from a roofing company and an estimate of the length of time this project will take, but want to get some other opinions. thanks!

Complete demo/removal of a free standing red-brick fireplace?
I have a large (8ft wide-3ft deep) redbrick fireplace in the middle of my living room, extending ~20ft up through my vaulted ceiling and then another 4ft above the roofline. I want to remove it to open up the space. I'm guessing I'll contract with a roofing guy to patch the ceiling and roof, but am considering doing the demo myself. How would you go about removing a fireplace of this size? Am I asking for a major headache or is this doable?

Can I burn wood in my free standing gas stove? (fireplace)?
the wood burning model looks identical to the gas model that I have except for the handle. It has the airtight rope around the door and everything. I couple of air vents in the back and removal of wires and gas lines is all that I can see that would need to be removed. There was a wood stove there originally so the chimney is already wood ready.
