Can i put a wood burning fireplace insert into my gas log fireplace?
I have an old coal fireplace that was converted into a gas log fireplace....I hate gas and i want to put a wood burning insert...is this possible? I figure i'd have to reinforce the chimney with something...but i don't know what....any help would be nice.

We live in a split level home with the family room on the half level (if that makes sense). Due to oil prices we are looking at wood burning fireplace insert. I have 2 questions regarding them 1) One of our kids has asthma. The fireplace inserts seem to burn with little or no smoke within the house. Has anyone used this with an asthma sufferer in their home? 2) One place we visited today was very insistent on getting one brand esp. since it didn't have any seams. They stated that with seamed brands (like VT Casting and Jotul) was more prone to less efficient burning due to their seams. Is this true? We were looking at VT Casting since it is on our budget.

I am house hunting and must have a fireplace. I have read a little and found that gas would be the best option for me. When I do find a house with a fireplace it will probably be wood-burning with a chimeny.
