How well should a wood burning fireplace blower work?
I just bought a new home and it came with a woodburning fireplace insert with blower and it seems like no air is getting blown out hardly at all. When put paper in front of it the paper blows out very little maybe 1/4 of inch.

how do you get more heat from a wood burning fireplace with gas log-lighter?
i have a wood burning fireplace with a gas log-lighter. i just use the fireplace basically as a gas fireplace as i dont feel like going through the trouble to burn real wood. the problem is that the heat goes right through the damper and out the chimney and does not provide very much, if any, heat to the room. what can i do to increase the heat with the current system i have? is it possible to install a blower? or is that just for ventless fireplaces? the fake wood and ambers that are in there now certainly look nice but arent providing the necessary heat that one would expect. Am i just using the fireplace wrong and should be using real wood in the first place? any suggestions would be helpful. thanks.

Not sure if I have a gas lighting wood burning fireplace or a gas fireplace. How can I tell the difference?
We have wood sitting on top of a rack with holes in it and a blue flame key switch outside. Previous owner burned logs in it. However, vent switch doesn't want to move, blower blows cold air and bricks are charred and cracked. So, I know it needs inspection and work. I just would like to know if it is a wood burning or gas fireplace for safety reasons.

Is there a way to add some efficiency to a wood burning fireplace?
Our fireplace is only 4 years old, but is not adaptable to a blower. And my husband wants to keep the fireplace woodburning - he's not interested in converting it to a gas fireplace. Any suggestions?

How can I get the most heat/efficiency from my wood burning fireplace?
Our 90 year old farmhouse has a great old stone fireplace with a built-in blower. The blower has two small internal fans that gently pull air through small grates on each side of the fireplace and push heated air out through a larger grate that's above the fire box. We currently have an open-hearth, with a removable metal/mesh screen, but we are ready for some sort of upgrade to improve efficiency and heat output. We would really like to heat with wood as much as possible...propane for our central heat is VERY expensive! Would glass doors help substantially? I know glass doors reduce heat loss from around the house, but do they really increase the heat output? I've read they actually reduce the heat output while the fire is burning, but reduce heat loss when it's not. Is it worth buying an insert, since the fireplace already has a blower built in...or would adding glass doors essentially turn the whole thing INTO an insert, since an insert is really just a sealed box with a blower? How about removing the fans in the blower and replacing them with more powerful fans? Would that help, or just rush the air through the system so fast it doesn't really heat up? I've read a bunch about fireplace efficiency online, so I know a bit about this...but none of the stuff I've been reading assumes a built-in blower...does the presence of a built-in blower system change the general efficiency recommendations for a wood burning fireplace? Any input or suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

replacing my factory installed fireplace with a more efficient insert or wood stove-brands performance anyone?
I bought a manufactured home with what I thought was a wood burning fireplace insert...it is only a fireplace with a blower and unsealed glass doors. If you close the doors, the heat is the same as standing in front of a wall. Also, I managed to melt the grate last season trying to heat the room?? So I want to remove and replace with a real fireplace insert. I understand that there are fireplace inserts for manufactured fireplaces..which allow you to skip the masonry work required for other inserts. Has anyone installed one and was there a marked improvement in the heating capacity? If satisfied what brand did you get? I'm trying to decide whether to do the masonry work and install an standard insert instead of one intended for manufactured fireplaces. Also any suggestions on the most efficient inserts, hearth heaters or wood stoves, brands would be appreciated. Has anyone used a soapstone wood stove? I want heat without deforestation. My Arkansas home is around 1600 feet. Thanks for the help,
